The written word remains to this day mankind'sgreatest invention.

Consider for a moment all those gadgets that we ascribe to and all the technology that we can barely survive without, they all owe their birth and continual survival to the "written word."

Without the written word, books would not be, instructions could not be read and passed on .... society as we know it today would not have existed.  Whether it be a caveman's drawing in Neanderthal times or a sceen play that became a movie, writing to communicate has been mankind's premier choice for the preservation of their culture for future generations.

There is no learning, knowledge or understanding to be had without the written word.

And so I write, for the love of the words themselves as well as the messages they are meant to convey.

THE GOSPEL IN TRINI

The Christian Bible tells us that when Jesus Christ came to earth in the form of mankind He wore the clothing style of the era He was born in and spoke the accepted dialect in those times.

He was born in the nation of Israel.  He was a Jew.

But what if he were to have come today?

A Trinidadian, hailing from the Caribbean.  Black of skin and coarse of hair……..from East Dry River, Laventille, or supposed he hailed from the Beetham Estate....all economically depressed areas of Trinidad.

Born of a 16 year old virgin……..and her husband to be…..a 42 year old taxi driver.  Not to mention, she would be the child of a very lowly and poor family.

How would we accept that?

Something tells me the self righteous congregation of the saints today might just have a slight problem with his heritage....but let's imagine....just because we can!

“Good morning Mary” he said.

“How you know my name”? Mary asked.

“You are a very blessed young woman,” he continued.  “I have some very good news for you.”

“Who are you”? Mary asked.

“I am an angel, my name is Gabriel and GOD has sent me to tell to a few things.”

At this point Mary began to wonder.  She remembered her mother telling her about soucouyants and douens, and about people seeing spirits.  But she could not remember her mother telling her any instance where they actually talked to a spirit.  Anyway this did not look like a spirit, it looked like a man.  The only thing different about him was that he was not smoking or trying to sweet talk her like most of the older men in her area.  He was actually talking about GOD.

“Mary”, he continued, “sit down a little bit I need to tell you something.”

“Ah cyah’ stay too long, I have to finish fullin’ de water.”

She sat down.

“Mary, you are going to have a baby.”

She stood up.  “I feel you talking about Mary from in de alley yuh know.  Everybody done know she pregnant arready.”

“No Mary, you have been chosen by GOD to give birth to his son.” Gabriel continued.  “You will name him Jesus.  He will be great and shall be called the son of the highest.”

“But I never had sex, how I going to get pregnant?”

“GOD will take care of it.  Nothing is impossible to him you know.”

“You sure is me yuh want?”

“Very Sure.”

“But I doh understand.  Why me?  An’ how yuh plannin’ on getting me pregnant?”

“GOD will take care of everything.”

Mary shook her head and closed her eyes in despair………“So what I supposed to tell my mother when my belly getting big mister?”

“Yuh belly getting big?”  Jeremy her brother asked.

Mary opened her eyes to find that the man had gone and her brother Jeremy had come to empty his bucket into the drum.
